The Mechanism
When a drive fails in a massive server chassis or NAS enclosure, a system administrator must identify and pull the dead drive.
The Impact on RAID 5
If the slots are poorly labeled and the admin accidentally pulls a healthy drive instead of the dead one, the array instantly suffers a double-drive failure and crashes. Even if the healthy drive is immediately plugged back in, the controller may view it as "stale" or out-of-sync, refusing to automatically rebuild the array and requiring complex manual forcing tools to recover.
