The Mechanism
Because RAID 10 arrays often consist of many drives (frequently 8, 12, or 24 bays in enterprise setups), identifying physical drives accurately is critical. Human errors usually stem from panic or poor labeling:
- Pulling the Wrong Drive: Drive 1 fails. The administrator goes to pull it but accidentally pulls healthy Drive 2 (its mirrored twin). This instantly kills the pair and crashes the server.
- Incorrect Slot Migration: Moving drives to a new server chassis or motherboard and plugging them into different ports out of their original sequence. If the controller doesn't support automatic drive roaming, the stripe order is broken.
