As Lenovo took full control of the ThinkPad line, Seagate's Laptop Thin (7mm) and standard Mobile HDD (9.5mm) units became staple factory components in mainstream series like the ThinkPad T400 through T460, as well as the budget Edge/E-series.
Severe Platter Degradation & "Bad Sector Cascade"
Seagate drives deployed in mid-generation Lenovo laptops were prone to sudden, escalating bad sectors. While all mechanical drives develop bad sectors over time, these specific Seagate models frequently suffered from a phenomenon where the magnetic coating on the platters would micro-flake off. The tiny fragments would become trapped inside the sealed chamber, floating over the spinning disks and acting like abrasive sand. This caused a catastrophic loop: one bad sector turned into thousands overnight, leading to frozen operating systems, corrupt Windows registries, and extremely slow file access.
