Overview & Target Models
Representing the legacy tier of consumer computing, these standard 3.5-inch consumer SATA drives (500GB to 2TB capacities from Seagate Barracuda or WD Blue lines) were standard issue before solid-state drives took over.
Common Failure Modes
- Stiction (Slick-and-Friction Mechanical Seizure): In consumer systems left powered off for long intervals, the read/write heads can fail to park correctly on the landing zone and become physically stuck to the polished platter surfaces. When powered on, the spindle motor hums quietly but cannot spin, completely bricking the drive.
- Stripe Corruption on Single-Platter SMR Media: Later editions of these consumer drives adopted Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) to save manufacturing costs. SMR drives overlap tracks like roof shingles. Under heavy, continuous write workloads (such as OS updates or background indexing on a Dell OptiPlex), the drive's internal data management logic becomes overwhelmed, causing severe system freezes and sector corruption.
